Leadership Reality # 2
Leadership Reality#2
I cannot expect from those that I lead what I'm not willing to do myself!
We had a chance to practice this recently at our church. Laurie and I sowed into our new building. Because we did we can now expect others to do the same, following our lead in giving. Or, we have earned the right to at least ask. On the other hand if I pushed the responsibility off on everyone else I lose my right to expect anything from anyone. If you are a leader at any capacity, in any field, paid or not, when you call for a time of sacrifice you had better be willing to lead the way. If you can't.... then stop leading now!! Let me say this as disclaimer: Sacrifice is not so much an amount as it is an act. As a leader I cannot expect my leaders to have their homes in order if my house is not! I cannot expect those I lead to live disciplined if my personal life is out of control. This goes for every area even HEALTH and I'm working on that one personally!
I'm going to camp on this reality for a few more moments. I'm speaking now primarily to Christian leaders of Non - Profit Organizations. I'll keep it sweet and simple. If you are a volunteer working or serving at a church for no $ listen up. If you are doing all that you are doing unto the Lord then the church owes you nothing!! So when it comes time to lead the temptation sometimes is......I'll let others step up and pick up the slack because after all I already do so much for nothing. I've done enough or I've put my time in. If this is your attitude then please render your services and learn the act of sacrifice! We must guard our hearts from a false sense of entitlement.
Now to those Pastors and leaders that take advantage of those that serve and volunteer at your churches shame on you. Do not abuse your staff! When you can and are able compensate them! If you ease your conscious at night by convincing yourself that they are lucky just to have a chance to work with you. Check your ego and your credential in at the door!
So, for now lead well and by example!
