Leadership......A Game of Inches

It's amazing to me that a game played on a field 100yds long can be lost because of an inch or two. As a football coach I was faced with this reality a few weeks ago. It was late in the 4th quarter and the clock was running.   We needed a touchdown to win the game. Because of the running clock this would be our last drive and last chance to win.  We were driving the ball successfully down the field, it was looking good. With a minute or so left we were faced with a situation........4th down and inches. The entire game came down to a few inches. We ran up the middle hoping to gain the needed inches to continue the drive. The referees called for a measurement. I remember as they stretched out the chain, it was close. The referee turns to our sideline and yells, "you missed it by an inch". We were forced to turn the ball over and lost the game over an INCH.

In the same way a leadership is played out on the huge playing field of life. When it comes to a leader's character and integrity it becomes a game of inches. I've seen to many leaders have too turn the ball over and walk away from a dream because of a seemingly small flaw in their character. King David surely thought that a quick glimpse at a naked Bathsheba was no big deal. Well, we know how that story go's. It was a huge deal!

As leaders the small things are huge!!!! The small things can cost us everything. The next time you find yourself saying, it's not that big of a deal, you may want to stop and think again! Determine now, that you will not be forced to turn the ball over because of an inch.
